The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian
Community
(SRPMIC) is located in Maricopa County and is situated east of
Scottsdale. The reservation consists of approximately 56,000 acres and
is adjacent to Scottsdale to the west and north, and Mesa and Tempe to
the south. The Community adjoins the Fort McDowell Indian Community at
the northeast corner. Of the 56,000 acres, 13,000 are set aside for
agriculture; 1,000 acres are designated for industrial use; and 13,000
acres are designated for commercial use. The remaining acreage is used
for recreation, housing, and desert preservation.
The Community is
categorized in these terms of ownership or use-rights: allotted land is
that which is owned by tribal members, Community-owned land which is
owned by the tribe; and natural desert preserved land upon which no
development is allowed is located along Highway 87 (Beeline) on the
Community’s eastern border.
The
Tonto National Forest
and the Superstition Mountains, site of the
Lost Dutchman Gold Mine; as well as the Apache trail, are east of the
Community. Saguaro, Canyon, Apache, and Roosevelt lakes are nearby for
swimming, boating, fishing and outdoor recreation.
Community facilities
include five parks, two swimming pools, a library, a museum, five ball
diamonds, three recreation centers, one movie theater and one drive-in
theater. Golf courses include Cypress, an 18-hold course, Pavilion
Lakes, and Talking Stick Golf Club featuring two 18-hole courses.

The Community owns
several enterprises in addition to the Casino.
Cypress Golf Course
is Community-owned and consists of two nines, the “Long Nine” for the
conditioned golfer, and the “Short Nine” for the beginner and those who
want to gain on their short game. There is also 500 square feet of
retail discount golf merchandise and the latest in golf equipment.
Talking Stick Golf
Club
is a 36-hole, signature golf course open to
the public and owned by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community
and located on the Community’s land. The course was designed by,
architect Bill Coore, and two-time Masters Champion Ben Crenshw. The
course is leased to and operated by Troon Golf, Inc., and was designed
to cater to the high-end consumer. It is home to the Golf Digest
Instructional School, a state-of-the-art teaching center under the
direction of Tim Mahoney. Student golfers have access to video
equipment, nearly 100 hitting stations, and a 170-yard practice hold
adjacent to the range. On premises are a clubhouse, golf shop,
restaurant, and locker room. The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian
Community collects a 1.4 percent sales tax on the golf course’s

The Salt River Materials Group,
a business merger of two Community enterprises, Phoenix Cement and Salt
River Sand and Rock is located in Clarkdale, Arizona, was built by
American Cement Company in the late 1950s to furnish cement to build
Glen Canyon Dam. It was purchased by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian
Community in 1987. The Community undertook an aggressive $13 million,
three-year capital improvement program to increase capacity and

Salt River Sand & Rock
specializes in select ABC sand, rock, and landscape materials.
Currently the company supplies all types of Base, Redimix and Asphalt
aggregates to the major suppliers in the Phoenix metro area and operates
nine full time production plants.
Saddleback Communications
is a local telecommunications company with big business solutions. Some
of the solutions offered by the company are voice mail systems, call
center and networking solutions, and shared tenant services. Saddleback
currently provides digital phone equipment and services to businesses
located on the Community, some of which include Chaparral Office Park,
Salt River Materials Group and Casino Arizona. For more information

Red Mountain Trap
& Skeet
is owned and operated by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian
Community. It is the
only club in the nation owned by an Indian Community. Red
Mountain Trap & Skeet
has a variety of activities, including corporate shoots, fun shoots, and
leagues as well as many other trap and skeet events. There is also a pro
shop on the facility with a wide range of items including a full line of
reloading supplies.
Salt River DEVCO
is the latest enterprise of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian
Community. Created in February of the year 2000, Salt River Devco is
moving forward in its mission to assist landowners in the development of
their properties along the Pima Freeway Commercial corridor and has
taken full management duties of selected Community assets.
Salt River Landfill
is award winning and has been praised for its environmental excellence
and design. It is located on 200 acres north of State Route 87 at
Gilbert Road on Community land. It opened in 1993 and will be developed
in five phases. Construction was performed by the Salt River Sand & Rock
Company. The landfill serves Scottsdale, Mesa, Gilbert and Tempe.

Businesses
Reflective of the
Community’s entrepreneurial spirit, are several member-owned businesses
including: a Chevron self-service station and convenience mart, Texaco
self service station, JR’s convenience store, On-Auk-Mor Smoke Shops,
and the Pavilions, which is a 147-acre master-planned power center. The
center offers retail shops, restaurants, and entertainment facilities.
Tenants include: Target, home Depot, Best Buy, Mervyn’s and Circuit
City. It is the largest retail complex yet on tribal land and is an
impressive accomplishment. |
