Tonto Apache Reservation, Tonto Apache Tribe

The Tonto Apache Tribe is located in northwestern Gila County approximately 95 miles northeast of Phoenix and 100 miles southeast of Flagstaff, Arizona. Consisting of 85 acres, the Reservation is south of and adjacent to the community of Payson, Arizona. The Tribe's land base of 85 acres makes it the smallest Reservation in the State of Arizona; however, the size will increase upon the Tribe’s acquiring an additional 240 acres of land from the US Forest Service.

The Reservation is surrounded by a variety of major landforms. The Mazatzal Mountains are located to the west; the Sierra Ancha Mountains are to the south; and the Mogollon Rim to the north. Elevations range from 4,975 feet to 5,115 feet.

Much of the US Forest Service land surrounding the reservation abounds in timber and outdoor recreational potential with lakes, streams, and campgrounds. Surface water run-off for the basin is estimated at 550,000 acre-feet of yearly flow. Areas adjacent to the Mogollon Rim consist of dense igneous rocks and consolidated sedimentary rocks.
