Synopsis
Backpacking Grand Canyon from Rim to Rim is the experience of a lifetime. Carved a mile deep by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon offers the most adventurous and awe-inspiring hiking terrain in the world. Most people see the canyon from the rim, but this trip goes into its depths providing an intimate glimpse of this natural wonder. Backpack 24 miles on established trails over 5 days from the South Rim to the Colorado River and up to the North Rim. Spend four nights at developed campgrounds in the Canyon and along the Colorado River at historic Phantom Ranch, haven to hikers and river runners since the early 1900s. Hotel lodging (private bath) in Flagstaff before and after backpack.

Course Description
The Premiere Grand Canyon Backpacking Adventure
Discover what you cannot see from the rim! Pristine streams and waterfalls, secret groves of lush vegetation, and majestic scenery are experienced everyday as you backpack through the depths of the Grand Canyon. Trek through five life zones and nearly half the earth’s geologic history as you travel from the more popular South Rim to the lofty pines and cool breezes of the North rim.  Enjoy an entire day (layover day) near the Colorado River at the Phantom Ranch area absorbing the beauty and exploring the mystery of the inner gorge.  Learn the geology, unique ecology, and human history of this incredible land while in the company of experienced wilderness guides.  Drinking water available at each camp location.  Some equipment and food will be packed in and out by mule.
Activity Level: 6 (see description)

Strenuous hiking (24 miles over four days, five to eight miles per day) carrying backpacks weighing approx. 30-35 lbs. at altitudes from 2,400 feet to 8,200' feet, with elevation changes from 1,400'feet to 4,200 feet; uneven, sometimes rocky terrain. Drinking water and toilet facilities available along the trail. Some equipment and supplies packed in/out by mule.
For experienced and serious backpackers only.  Prior and continued physical conditioning is crucial.

Bring tent, backpack, sleeping bag and pad; equipment available for rental if needed.

Program Features
* Hostelers will carry a backpack weighing up to 35lbs.
*
Net elevation gain and loss will be between 4600 and 5800 feet.
* Tent camp or sleep under the Arizona starry skies.
* Geology, natural and human history talks conducted in the field.
   a layover day at Phantom Ranch will allow participants indulge in
   "civilization" at the bottom of the canyon.
* Side trips to Plateau Point and Ribbon Falls will be offered.

Accommodations
Flagstaff lodging 2 nights in modern hotel with indoor pool and spa. Grand Canyon lodging: 4 nights at developed campgrounds in Grand Canyon.
