Course Description
Grand
Canyon Ecosystem Restoration
The rims of Grand Canyon bear the impact of millions of
visitors that come to enjoy the park’s natural beauty. Some visitors
unwittingly bring with them the seeds of invasive and exotic plants.
As a result the park conducts ongoing revegetation efforts to
promote healthy, natural ecosystems in heavily visited areas of the
park. At Grand Canyon hostelers will assist the park with projects
ensuring that native plants of Grand Canyon thrive and flourish.
Work may include removal of exotic invasive plants, collection of
native seed for use in future reveg projects, planting native plants
in construction or heavy use areas, watering/monitoring newly
revegetated areas, and assisting in a variety of tasks in the park’s
native plant nursery.
Volunteers are essential to Park efforts to preserve and protect
the natural resources and beauty of Grand Canyon NP. Volunteering
gives hostelers the opportunity to learn from Park biologists who
share knowledge of the Canyon while becoming stewards of one of the
world’s natural wonders. Work may involve frequent bending, digging,
carrying objects up to 30 pounds, and moderate walking up to two
miles daily. No previous experience required. Training/tools
provided. Work gloves recommended.
