Course Description
From Chaco Canyon Past to Zuni
Present
Native American culture goes back two
millennia in the Southwest, during a time when an ancient people called
the Anasazi laid the cultural foundations for the modern pueblo peoples
who occupy eastern Arizona and western New Mexico. See echoes of this
cultural past as we visit the Zuni reservation with a Zuni guide. Learn
about the Spanish quest for the "Cities of Gold" and subsequent attacks
on Zuni villages in the 16th century. Admire the Katsina murals of Alex
Seowtewa, who is preserving traditions in a Catholic church erected
during Spanish colonization. Spend a full day at Chaco Canyon exploring
this ceremonial hub of the Anasazi world. From prehistory to
contemporary culture, come to understand how the past influences the
present.
Includes two full-day active field trips with walking of up to one
mile required.
