Synopsis
Nestled at the base of Arizona's highest peak, Mt Humphries, lies
the charming, vibrant mountain community of Flagstaff. Designated our
country's first "International Dark Sky City," Flagstaff has dazzling
night skies and is surrounded by ponderosa pines, aspen forests,
volcanic lava flows, and the magnificent San Francisco Peaks. With
convenient access via plane, train and bus, Flagstaff is 140 miles north
of Phoenix.
Course Description
The Hopi, descendants of the ancestral puebloans (Anasazi),
have continually occupied 3 mesas in northeastern Arizona for over 1000
years and maintain a primarily agrarian culture. Through field trips and
lectures, learn how the Hopi respond to modern challenges -- including
their proximity to the Navajo Reservation -- and strive to ensure the
continuance of their culture. Spend a full day exploring the Hopi Mesas
with a visit to a 1000 year old village. See a Hopi artisan at work --
coiling pots or making Kaatsina dolls. Visit the acclaimed Museum of
Northern Arizona in Flagstaff with its priceless collection of artifacts
and Native American art. Engage in discussion with Hopi tribal members
about the challenges of living in two worlds.
