Canyon in 1869 he was relatively unknown. After his dangerous and
epic journey, he was an American hero and expert on the desert
southwest. Learn about this visionary public figure during this 6
night program. Meet in Flagstaff and travel through the area Powell
explored including Page, on the shores of
Lake
Powell, and Grand Canyon National Park. Learn from scholars and
others who study the Powell legacy. Visit Museum of Northern Arizona,
Sunset Crater National Monument
and John Wesley Powell Museum. Raft the smooth waters of
the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam dwarfed by 800' tall red
rock cliffs and spend two nights on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.
Course Description
Discovering John Wesley Powell: His Life, Landscapes,
and Legacy
Powell is usually remembered as the intrepid adventurer who explored
the Colorado River through the depths of the Grand Canyon.
But this one-armed civil war veteran was a man among men. Discover
the role Powell played in the exploration and settlement of the
west. How did his Canyon trip prompt surveys of western lands? What
motivated him to caution the public about western water issues?
Talk with scholars, river rafters, geologists and others who have
studied and been inspired by Powell. Engage in group discussions
about Powell's life and legacy.
