Description
The Amazing Rock
Art and Prehistory of Northern Arizona #15294
What makes rock art so intriguing? Come discover
this ancient and mysterious "art" form including pictographs and
petroglyphs at little-known and off the beaten path sites throughout
N. Arizona. Visit rock art sites adjacent to prehistoric ruins
providing more evidence of their meaning. Learn from archaeologists
and rock art experts about the lifeways of those who recorded their
presence -- Sinagua and ancestral puebloan (Anasazi) -- and modern
analogs in contemporary Native American culture -- Hopi. Visit sites
at Homolovi Ruins State Park, in Sedona's red rock country and in a
beautiful canyon on a private ranch; many sites listed on National
Register of Historic Places. Decipher meaning and make connections
at visited sites.
Field trips involve walks of 1-3 miles over uneven
terrain, with some overland hiking. Be prepared for walking in rocky
and sandy conditions. Hiking pole/staff recommended.
Flagstaff, Arizona and the Northern Arizona University campus are
located in the pines at an elevation of 7000 feet. Flagstaff is the
