In today's business world, success depends on the efficient
use of information systems technology. Managers need employees
with state-of-the-art technical knowledge and a thorough foundation
in general business concepts.
At NAU, we prepare professionals to fill those needs. Graduates
of the CIS program are ready for positions as programmers, systems
analysts, programmer analysts, database developers or administrators,
network and systems analysts, and/or web developers.
CIS coursework focuses on the technical skills required in the
information systems environment used in business today.
Specifically, our CIS program delivers an applied and
theoretical, technology-based curriculum. Our courses cover the
following areas:
- A foundation of information system concepts
- Ability to adapt to changing technologies through life-long learning skills
- Analytical problem-solving skills
- Written and communication skills
- Interpersonal team skills
- A comprehensive information systems technical skill set that meets employer demands
In addition, our program allows students to get hands-on
knowledge of leading edge development environments and software
products. These include:
- Language skills in C# and SQL
- Database and client/server skills in Access and Oracle
- Object-Oriented system analysis and design skills using Rational Rose
- High level application development using
Microsoft Visual Studio, Oracle, Access, and web development environments
- Data communications, networking, and web development skills in UNIX and Windows environments
Over and above the core skills, students can
experience new and expanding areas of technology, such as:
- Data warehousing and database administration
- Electronic commerce and web-based technologies
- ERP systems and design and programming of SAP ERP systems
